When Niccolo Rosselli, the driven, charismatic leader of a Florentine political movement, collapses at a rally, his young party immediately comes under threat. And when it emerges that his long time partner, Flavia, has disappeared, leaving behind not only a devastated husband but their newborn son, the political becomes dangerously personal - and Sandro Cellini is drafted in to investigate.

A Darkness Descending (Audible Audio Edition) Christobel Kent Saul Reichlin Whole Story Audiobooks Books

I have enjoyed the previous Sandro Cellini books by Christobal Kent but this one really took an effort to get into. Kent sets up the plot line, actually seemingly two or three plot lines, but then nothing really happens until about halfway through. After completing the book, I had too many questions. Why play so coy with explaining the nature of the victim's addiction (which wasn't revealed until almost at the end)? Who was exactly behind all the nefarious scheming, the army, the government, Florentine business interests, or all three? Why didn't the villain have more of a presence in the novel? As terrible as he was, he should have been more visible so that the reader could have had a better grasp of his role. As it was, his evil and malevolence are described more than shown and he comes across as only a minor character. How exactly was Piero involved? Was he really only a catspaw? If so, why? The main characters are, as always, true and highly likeable. However, the sense of brooding evil which Kent undoubtedly wanted to depict just isn't there. I found myself far more worried about the baby in the arms of the venomous grandmother than about the conspiracies wracking Florence and Italy. This could have been a gripping book but it was a slogging chore to finish it. This is unfortunate because Kent has real talent in constucting characters and in depicting the city of Florence.

A Darkness Descending (Audible Audio Edition) Christobel Kent Saul Reichlin Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews

This book was slow to start but as it gathered momentum so did the excitement. It is a well written and articulate, the plot is excellent and deserves many more readers to enjoy this book.
A great read, especially if you are traveling in Italy, a real feel of Italy.
The story was somewhat of a letdown in terms of mystery, especially at the conclusion.
I love CK a darker version of Donna L and you cannot beat the setting or the little characters he fills each page with; they are a bit denser Han DL but with good editing so you don't really notice it as you get grabbed by the story.
Christobel Kent is a new author for me, and I could hardly wait to read her entire Sandro Cellini series set in Florence (my favorite European city).
As an American person who has been lucky enough to know Native Italians and thus is able to have spent many months in Tuscany specifically in Firenze/Florence I savor reading each word chapter & page of this yummy "detective story genre" book! The owner of BM Books suggested her books to me on my last visit August 2012 & I purchased 2 on the spot! Now as I live out another frigid "Minnesota Winter" I treat myself to a familiar journey back through the gorgeous, yellow-orange, warm terra-cotta cobblestone lanes of my favorite city on Earth! Kent infuses her characters with Italian-ese and her physical "place" descriptions are spot on! If you LOVE Tuscany's TREASURES ambience as much as I do Read This tome! ciao bella!
Was introduced to Sandro Cellini, private detective in Florence, Italy, with Kent's first novel featuring this protagonist, The Drowning River, and have read his 3 subsequent Cellini novels, enjoying each and every one of them. I love the characters--Sandro's wife, Luisa; his assistant and "daughter by choice," Guili; his gruff former partner on the police squad, Pietro; and those characters specific to the mystery who come to Sandro for his help and those who help in their own way to solve the cases. It doesn't hurt, either, that author makes the reader feel as if she is navigating the streets and pausing in the plazas of Florence as Sandro wends his way through the city he loves and the mystery he must solve. This novel does not disappoint!
